Diaspora Nurses Drive Global Health Innovation at RCN’s London Event

George Williams 1 year ago

On June 16, 2025, the Royal College of Nursing (RCN) held the “Connecting Champions: Global Nursing Diaspora Event” at Cowdray Hall in London, celebrating the work and influence of UK-based diaspora nursing groups on global health.

The gathering brought together diaspora nurses to share their contributions, particularly those made beyond the UK. Attendees had the opportunity to network, present their projects, and discuss their impact on international healthcare systems.

Moses Mulimira, who serves as the Global Health Partnerships Diaspora Engagement Advisor, highlighted the essential role that diaspora nurses play in transforming healthcare on a global scale. He applauded their leadership and urged continued cross-border collaboration to enhance health systems worldwide.

Mulimira noted that diaspora health professionals, including Ugandan nurses working within the NHS, significantly contribute to global health advancement. He pointed out that their influence is evident in both the UK’s healthcare system and international health initiatives.

“We’re honoured to hear from diaspora nurses from Uganda and beyond who lead within the NHS, sharing their journeys, perspectives, and the crucial roles they play every day,” he said.

Through the NHS’s #ExpertsinOurMidst initiative, Global Health Partnerships is tapping into the knowledge, leadership, and lived experiences of diaspora staff to bolster healthcare delivery both domestically and internationally.

A participating nurse remarked that the resilience and diverse backgrounds of diaspora communities enrich the societies they serve, while their collective skills and experiences offer valuable solutions to global challenges.

The event featured a showcase panel that highlighted nurse-led global health initiatives, with presentations from organizations working in various regions worldwide. The forum not only celebrated their efforts but also examined how organizational partnerships are instrumental in supporting global health programs.

This well-attended event served as a platform for knowledge exchange, networking, and recognition of the vital role diaspora nurses play in shaping healthcare beyond borders.
